Coaching

Varsity Head Coach Steven Van Horn

I was born in Dallas, TX and attended Marcus High School in Flower Mound, about 25 miles north of the metroplex.  A three year letter winner, I went on to all district (section) and all area (metro) accolades as a junior and senior.  I played club soccer as a member of the ’83 boys team of the Hawks Soccer Club.  There we were state cup finalists twice and perennial semi finalists.  We were one of only four teams in the ’83 age group to have played their entire club careers in the Classic League I.  With this club, I played in five Dallas Cups (XVI, XVII, XX, XXI, XXII) where in 1999 we defeated the national champion Chicago Magic 2-1 en route to a quarterfinal appearance losing to the two time defending champions and eventual champions CF Monterrey (Mexico).  We also played in the Gothia Cup (Sweden) and were semi-finalists in the Harrlem Cup (Netherlands).  The Hawks Soccer Club merged with the Dallas Texans Soccer Club in the summer of 2003.

After high school I moved to Huntsville to play for the University of Alabama-Huntsville.  As a four year starter I garnered a 1st team all conference award as a junior midfielder in 2003.  I repeated this feat in 2004 with another 1st team all conference award and was also selected to the NSCAA/Adidas All South Region Team as a senior.  In the summer of 2008 I played an integral role on the inaugural squad of Rocket City United and will continue playing for the 2009 season.

Shortly after my playing career at UAH ended I got involved coaching with the Kicks Soccer Club in 2004.  I assisted with the ’92 girls winning the under 14 Div. 1 state championship.  The following year I continued coaching with the Kicks helping to take the ’90 girls to the under 17 Div. 1 state cup finals.  After two years with the Kicks I joined United Soccer Club where I helped coach the ’90 girls to another state cup finals appearance.  This past season my ’91 girls team reached the Div 1 state cup semi-finals.

I graduated from UAH in December 2006 with a Bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering and am currently employed by DRS Technologies here in Huntsville.

Assisting is long-time assistant, Coach Greg Arndt, irreplaceable to our program.  His long hours of coaching, physical training, and maintaining our field can never properly be compensated.  The Grissom Soccer Program would never be where it is today without the selfless years of commitment of Coach Arndt.

Todd Wood serves Grissom as the JV coach.  Coach Wood is a former Grissom player and brings with him his club coaching experience.

Also, we have Doug Bailey, who is working with the goal keepers.
