Friday April 30
Game 28  GHS Varsity Men vs Huntsville HS (W 1-0)
The Tigers hosted the Panthers in the second round of substate play.  In this the third match between in-town rivals the outcome was the same.  The previous two matches between Grissom and Huntsville this year has been filled with intense hard play, strong defense, and spectacular goal keeping.  This game was no different.  The game was at 0-0 at half-time with Josh Cook forced to make just one save in goal for the Tigers.  Similarly, Drew Hannan had only 3 saves for the Panthers at that point.  In the second half, the Tiger defense snuffed out the Panther attack while the Tiger offense began to put some shots on frame.  Hannan was forced to make seven saves in the second half keeping the game knotted at 0 at full-time.  The first overtime seemed to be a continuation with Hannan making another save before Michael Giudici pushed the ball near the right corner and drove a hard low ball across the mouth of the goal.  Bradley Boyett leaned down and headed it past Hannan for the winner.  The Tiger back line of Giudici, Jonathon Ray, Justin Jong, and Chris Brahm played a defensive gem in this game to help secure the win and advance to the state semi-finals.

Game 29  GHS Varsity Men vs Auburn HS (W 3-1) state semi-final
The Grissom Tigers met the Auburn (HS) Tigers at Huntsville's John-Hunt Park in a state semi-final match.  Grissom came out with speed and foot skills to attack the Auburn end.  At 4 minutes Nick Smith assisted and Bobby Copeland scored to put Grissom up 1-0.  A few minutes later it was Copeland again, on a cross from Jake Vayda.  Unfortunately, this goal was disallowed.  The Auburn defense, physical and quick, began to stop Grissom further and further from their goal.  Auburn also began to push forward and at 12 minutes James Goldberg tied the game.  The score remained 1-1 at half-time.  In the second half, Grissom put more shots on goal, forcing Jonathan Oprandy to make 3 saves (he only had 1 in the first half).  At 33 minutes the Grissom attack upped the intensity as Josh Konantz passed the ball in front for a score by Matthew Volz (or Copeland who may have touched the ball as it crossed the line).  Then a minute later it was Konantz, unassisted tapping in the final goal for Grissom. Josh Cook finished with 2 saves in Grissom's goal.  The 3-1 score moves Grissom into the state championship final!

Game 30  GHS Varsity Men vs Hoover HS (W 3-0) state final

The Grissom Tigers faced the Hoover Buccaneers in the state championship final.  On a clear windy day, a packed house came to see this match and make some noise.  The scoring didn't begin until Mitch Wilson put in an unassisted shot at 25 minutes.  In the evenly played first half Josh Cook made two saves for the Tigers and Andrew Hardy made two saves for the Buc's.  In the second half, the Tigers came out with intensity and Wilson drove a hard ball across the goal mouth that Jake Vayda put in with just 4 minutes elapsed.  Three minutes later, Bradley Boyett assisted and Wilson put in his second goal.  The Tiger defense, along with six second half saves by Cook sealed the shutout and the win.  GRISSOM TIGERS 2010 MEN'S SOCCER 6A STATE CHAMPION !
