Highlights & Announcements

Welcome to the 2010 Grissom Soccer Season

Game 3  GHS Varsity Boys at Sparkman HS (W 4-0)
On a cool night and a wet field the Tigers put on their most consistent performance to date.  Crisp passing and solid defense was a good formula against the speedy, physical Senators.  The first Tiger score came midway through the first half when Jake Vayda took a beautiful pass from Josh Konantz and -- after two shots were deflected off the defense and goalie -- put the ball in the net.  At 31 minutes Vayda assisted Nick Smith for a 2-0 score at the half.  In the second half, the Senators came out pressing and tackling.  The Tigers countered with quick passing and a pressing attack.  At 7 minutes Vayda collected an errant pass at the Sparkman back line and easily scored.  The pressing attack continued but it wasn't until 23 minutes that Grissom got another score when Vayda asssisted Konantz.  The final score was 4-0 for the Tigers.  Bobby Copeland (moved to the back line for this game), Jonathan Ray, Michael Giudici, and Michael Marcott put in a strong defensive performance and Josh Cook got his first shutout in goal.

Game 2  GHS Varsity Boys at Bob Jones HS (W 3-2 SO)
In a battle between last year's section contenders (and traditional rivals) the Grissom HS varsity boys prevailed through overtime and a shootout to win.  Things looked good for the Tigers early when at 12 minutes Sam Nesman drove a long strike over the outstretched hands of Alex Roman and just under the crossbar.  This score (1-0) stood up at the half.  Six minutes into the second half, Tyler Rist broke through on a run and put the ball around Josh Cook to knot the score at 1-1.  At 27 minutes, Bradley Boyett put the Tigers back on top 2-1.  The Patriots answered at 35 minutes when Jeffrey Salinas tied the score again at 2-2.  Regulation ended in a tie and neither team could score in the overtime periods.  In the shootout Bobby Copeland, Nick Smith, Jesus Cordero, Michael Giudici, and Bradley Boyett all made their shots.  Patriots Michael Simpson, Sam Knap, and Tyler Rist made their shots, but it wasn't enough.  Grissom took the shootout 5-3 and the game 3-2.
